Police have arrested a man in connection with the collision that left an MPS Traffic officer critically ill in hospital.

PC Andrew Duncan, known as Andy, aged 47, remains in a critical condition in hospital after the collision that happened shortly before 0100 today.

The man, aged 25, attended a south London police station, yesterday afternoon where he was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury whilst dangerous driving.

Andy was working on a speed enforcement operation with a colleague, when they noticed a car driving at speed along Reigate Avenue toward Rosehill. Andy attempted to stop the car by signalling for the driver to pull over.

The driver of the car then collided with Andy, and drove off towards Rosehill. The car was found abandoned nearby, and officers would like to hear from anyone who was a passenger in the car at the time of the collision.

Reigate Avenue is a residential area and officers are appealing for any witnesses who may have seen the incident to get in touch with the investigation team. It is possible that people were looking out their windows at the time, or may have been out in the street.

Officers from the Traffic Operational Command Unit are investigating. The MPS is providing support to Andy's family, and his colleagues, at this difficult time.

Commander Dave Martin, said:

"Andy is a hard working and committed police officer. He is extremely popular with everyone he comes into contact with. The thoughts of the MPS are with Andy and his family at this distressing time, we are all wishing for his recovery."

The Commissioner, Sir Bernard Hogan-Howe said:

"An officer injured on duty is always upsetting for all of us in the Met and our best wishes are with him at this time. We will of course ensure that he, his family and his colleagues are being fully supported and a thorough investigation into the incident has already begun.

"Whilst serious injuries on duty are thankfully rare, it is a reminder of the courage of our front-line staff when carrying out their role to keep London safe."

Anyone with any information is asked to contact the investigation team 0208 941 9011
